Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina.
An increase in anaerobic bacteria and the Gardnerella organism which are
both present in the vagina, triggers this infection.

Another bacteria, Lactobacelli, which serves as a disinfectant
is unable to perform it’s useful function in such an environment.
Therefore bacerial vaginosis develops.

E-coli which is a natural habitant of the rectum can cause
bacterial vaginosis if it is spread to the vagina.
